2017 Midwest Regional AeroPress Championship on June 24 at Metropolis Roastery

Mark your calendars and get ready for a high pressure rumble that will send one worthy champ all the way to Seattle for the US AeroPress Championship in September! On June 24, Everybody’s Coffee will be partnering with Metropolis Coffee to throw a legendary coffee bash at the new Metropolis Roasting Facility. Expect to see some of the region’s best AeroPress skills take center stage as 18 competitors battle it out for the winning airfare to the nationals (including room & board!), coffee prizes, and the coveted golden AeroPress.

To compete, go to midwestaeropress.eventbrite.com on June 3 at 7 PM CST, when online sign-ups go live. Only 18 competitors will be eligible to compete, so be sure to register as soon as it goes live!

Competition Format and Rules

FORMAT

  1. The competition is a multi-round, elimination tournament.
  2. In each round, three competitors brew coffee simultaneously.
  3. Competitors have 8 minutes in which to prepare, brew, and present their coffee.
  4. When the time is up, the coffees are presented in identical vessels to a panel of three judges.
  5. The judges blindly evaluate each coffee and make their own private assessment as to which is the best.
  6. On the count of three, all judges simultaneously point to their preferred coffee.
  7. The winner progresses to the next round. The losers are eliminated.

RULES

  1. The brewer used must be a genuine Aerobie AeroPress.
  2. Any modifications to a brewer need to be authorized by the Hosts prior to the competition.
  3. Ground coffee and water are the only ingredients allowed.
  4. Any type of filter is allowed. This includes paper, metal, cloth, and all other types of filter.
  5. Competitors are welcome to bring their own grinder, kettle, scales, water, or other equipment.
  6. If the Hosts have specified a competition coffee, this is the only coffee that may be used.
  7. Competitors must present a minimum of 200ml of coffee, in the vessel provided.
  8. Coffees not presented within the time limit of 8 minutes will not be evaluated.
  9. Failure to comply with any of the above will result in disqualification.

JUDGING

  1. Each round is judged blind using the cupping technique of spoon, slurp, and spit.
  2. Competitor’s names will be marked on the underside of the cups where they are completely hidden.
  3. There is no scoresheet or formal judging criteria. Judges are simply answering: “Which cup would I prefer to drink all of?”
  4. Each judge will arrive at their own conclusion, without discussing the samples with their fellow judges.
  5. On the count of three, all judges will point simultaneously, confidently, and definitively at the cup of their choosing.
  6. After judging, the MC will lift the winning cup, revealing the name of the glorious round winner, while simultaneously shaming the losers.
  7. In the event of all three judges pointing at different cups, the MC or a pre-determined Head Judge will taste the coffees, and decide the round. This decision is final.

Rules

These are the official rules from the World Aeropress Championship’s blog (http://worldaeropresschampionship.com/about/the-rules/).

For this regional event, you are welcome to bring your own coffee. It can be any roasted coffee of the species Coffea Arabica or Coffea Robusta, or any hybrid of the two.

Before We Start; Four Things to note

  1. The format and rules of the competition are deliberately straight forward, and are designed to ensure that the events are fast paced, light hearted and fun affairs.
  2. The point of the competition is to explore the potential of the AeroPress brewer, and to celebrate its diverse methods of use.
  3. The most important thing is having a good time and brewing tasty coffee.
  4. If you’re looking for a competition win to kickstart your lucrative coffee consultancy or public speaking/trade show circuit career, you’re probably better off entering the WBC.

Format

  • On the count of three, the judges point simultaneously to their preferred cup.
  • The winner progresses gloriously to the next round, the losers are eliminated.

General Rules

  • Competitors must present a minimum of 200ml of brewed coffee, in the vessel provided.
  • Ground coffee and water are the only ingredients allowed to be used.
  • While small tweaks and hacks are permitted, the brewer used must ostensibly be a genuine Aerobie AeroPress.
  • All competitors will have a eight minutes in which to prepare, brew and present their coffee.
  • Failure to meet any of the above requirements will result in disqualification.
  • The competitors for each round in the tournament will be chosen randomly, and announced by the organisers prior to the competition starting.

Judging

  • Each round is blindly evaluated by three judges, with the competitors name being marked on the underside of the vessel.
  • Having tasted the coffees presented, judges will count down and simultaneously point at the cup they deem to be the best, according to the edict ““the cup I would most like to drink all of”.
  • Judges should be looking for aroma, pleasant flavour, a prominent sweetness and balanced acidity, good body and pleasing aftertaste.
  • Judges should not discuss the cups presented before choosing the winner.
  • After judging, the MC will lift the winning cup, revealing the name of the glorious round winner, simultaneously shaming the losers.
  • In the event of all three judges selecting different winners, the MC or a pre-determined fourth judge will decide the round.

Equipment and Ingredients

  • If the competition specifies a particular coffee be brewed with, no other coffee may be used.
  • While organisers are required to provide clean, fresh, filtered water to compete with, competitors are free to bring their own water.
  • While organisers are required to provide everything necessary to compete with, but competitors are permitted to bring their own kettle, scales, grinder and other equipment.
  • Any modifications to the AeroPress brewer will need to be authorised by the organisers before the competition, and if need be, by Alan Adler himself. As always, Alan’s word is final.
  • Any filters, including metal filters, are allowed.

So, don’t forget — this whole thing is supposed to be light-hearted and fun. Enjoy it, and don’t take it too seriously.
